ABOUT WILD CARROT
A passion for turning lawns into vegetable gardens
Wild Carrot is Hamilton base, founded by passionate gardener and vegetable enthusiast Laura Buckley. With a degree in International Development with a focus on Rural and Agricultural Development from the University of Guelph Laura set off to learn how to grow food. Her goal is to contribute to a healthier, local and more sustainable food system. Laura has been learning, growing and farming for over 10 years. She started her food growing journey in her parents suburban backyard where she slowly replaced lawn with raised garden beds and turned their carpeted basement into a 1000+ seedling "greenhouse".
Settling in Hamilton with her family she transformed the front yard of her small urban corner lot into a neighbourhood gem with raised garden beds and in ground gardens filled with strawberries, climbing vines of snacking peas and cucamelons and a lush tomato patch. Shortly after launching Wild Carrot in early 2021, their family moved to a dreamy one acre homestead which is now the Wild Carrot Headquarters.

With a focus on seasonal eating, food security and environmental action Laura is ready to bring her knowledge and passion for growing food to yards everywhere. Removing patches of grass to replace with lush vegetables, herbs and fruits is the Wild Carrot specialty.
Growing your own food is an action that helps to mitigate climate change, gives access to healthy and local food, teaches about seasonal eating and reduces food waste.
Specializing in vegetable garden design in urban areas, Wild Carrot uses small space growing techniques like vertical growing, succession planting and season extension to maximize harvest in yards.

Ilana - Hamilton Homesteader
When I first started out, all I knew was that I wanted to grow a veggie garden. I had a lawn, but literally everything else was a big question mark. How big should my garden boxes be? where do I get soil? what kind of soil? what veggies do I plant and where? where do I get the best seeds and seedlings? when should I prune and how?? I had a big vision and very little idea how to get from dream to reality. Finding Wild Carrot was the key. Laura literally walked me through every step of my garden, from vision to planning, building, planting, pruning, harvesting, and planning for the next year, and she did it all with her characteristic passion, expertise, and joy. I learned so much from working with Laura in my first year of planting and now, in my second year, I am continuing to consult her on my own choices, using the information I learned from the first year.

This is our first year working with Laura at Wild Carrot Homesteading, and we have been so impressed with her knowledge and passion! She has created a fabulous garden plan for us, tailored to our space, preference, and lifestyle. We can't wait to see our vegetable garden come to life this year and will no doubt be taking advantage of Laura's coaching sessions along the way!

We love Wild Carrot! Laura is a beautiful force - pure sunshine and extensive knowledge. We had total trust in Laura from start to finish to bring our dream of a vegetable garden to life. She designed the garden with our vegetable preferences in mind and installed and planted in one day. She worked hands on with our students the entire. This was a wonderful grass roots experience fostering community. And, we have been so lucky to also have Wild Carrot follow up and coaching sessions which keeps our garden producing. Absolutely recommend Wild Carrot!
